In order to begin stealing the keys of the fluffs, the Fallen Foxee began by teaching lies to Numbnowitz the Unbeliever at university.
Whenever a race of fluffs does not want its key, the Foxee can come and take it away.

Now that your father has relied on Numbnowitz' theology, he has given himself to the Foxee, who will use him to create a false religion.
Suddenly Pat's thoughts go back to that perfect moment in her infancy - the one that never was.

Pat realises that her battle has always been with the Foxee, not with her father. Now she is afraid what the Phoenix will do to him.
Even though Pat has not yet had her questions answered, she answers the Phoenix' question before it has been asked.

The Phoenix explains only he can defeat Foxee, but he cannot enter the universe; his fire would consume it. His key maintains all things.
The third person of the Phoenix is now to be revealed. The Phoenix will risk all by sending his Chick to live as a fluff.

Pat is amazed that she will prophesy the coming of the Phoenix, the emblem that she will bear.
The Phoenix tells Pat that before she can prophesy the coming of the Chick, she is to raise up the golden Foxee as Evangelist.
